Dr. Marcus Mina Gurgius

Dr. Gurgius is a Pain Medicine Specialist, currently consulting from Archer Street Health in Hobart. Dr. Gurgius has admission rights to Hobart Private Hospital, Calvary Hospital & St John’s Hospital.

Dr. Gurgius utilizes various pain intervention modalities including low-level laser therapy, laser acupuncture, ultrasound-guided platelet-rich plasma injection, ultrasound therapy for pain management, Ketamine infusion, ultrasound-guided nerve blocks and pulsed radiofrequency denervation. Dr Gurgius is one of a very few Pain Medicine Specialists nationwide, who combine various pain management skill sets.

Dr. Gurgius obtained his Primary Medical Degree from the University of Alexandria/Egypt (MBChB). On moving to Australia, Dr. Gurgius initially worked in Emergency Medicine in West Gippsland Hospital and he completed the Australian Medical Council Examinations (AMC Cert). Dr. Gurgius subsequently obtained the Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP), then the Fellowship in Advanced Rural General Practice (FARGP). After working for 8 years in Rural General Practice in Victoria, Dr. Gurgius started his training in Pain Medicine and Addiction Medicine. Dr. Gurgius eventually completed the Fellowship of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FFPMANZCA), which qualified him as a Pain Medicine Specialist. Furthermore, Dr. Gurgius recently obtained the American Board of Regenerative Medicine Diploma (DABRM).

Given Dr. Gurgius medical training and work experience in Emergency Medicine, Rural General Practice, Psychology, Pain Medicine & Addiction Medicine, Dr. Gurgius is well qualified to provide a holistic pain management care to his patients.

Dr. Gurgius is a Medicare-registered Focused Psychological Strategies Provider. As such, he is skilled to provide pain- focused psychological strategies.

Dr. Gurgius completed training in Addiction Medicine. He is also an authorized Opioid Replacement Therapy Prescriber in Tasmania. As such, he can help pain patients who struggle with addiction.

Dr. Gurgius completed a nationally accredited medical laser training. Dr. Gurgius’ medical laser machine is approved by the Australian Therapeutic and Goods Administration. Dr. Gurgius himself, Dr. Gurgius’ consulting rooms and Dr. Gurgius’ medical laser machine are also accredited by the Tasmanian Health Department. Dr. Gurgius is also a member of the Australian Medical Photobiomodulation Association.

Dr. Gurgius completed a masterclass about Medicinal Cannabis. As such, Dr. Gurgius is comfortable to work around Medicinal Cannabis; however, he isn’t interested in prescribing it at the moment.

Dr. Gurgius is registered on the Polio Australia’s Interdisciplinary Post-Polio Health Professionals Register.

Dr. Gurgius completed Monash University Certificate in Clinical Occupational Medicine. He also completed Family Planning Australia National Certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health for Doctors. Furthermore, Dr. Gurgius attended over 1000 Australian-based Medical Workshops, Conferences & Continuing Professional Development Events.

Dr. Gurgius is Senior Clinical Lecturer in the School of Medicine/ University of Tasmania. He is also Clinical Examiner in the Australian Medical Council, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and the School of Medicine/Deakin University.

Dr. Gurgius is happy to see and help with complex pain cases. Dr. Gurgius’ initial assessment consultation is at least 1 hour long.

A referral from Medical Doctor is required to see Dr. Gurgius.
